Composites Conference 2024: solving everyday challenges with advanced composites

ACM CRC Media Team • May 1, 2024

With a focus on ‘Acting on Vision’, this year’s Composites Conference will provide a strategic insight into a wide range of aspects associated with operating and growing a composites business and collaborating with composite companies.

Set to take place in Queensland’s Sunshine Coast from 1-2 May, and organised by ACM CRC Partner Composites Australia, the conference will explore how material science and the properties of advanced composites can solve everyday challenges.

The CRC’s Research Program 1 is committed to addressing key challenges in materials so they meet automation, affordability and circular economy requirements. Some of the country’s leading composite researchers are focusing on alternate material surfacing and specialist applications for specific high value uses, with targets including affordable high-performance materials, materials for automation, surface integration technologies, specialist application materials, and circular economy materials.

“There are several barriers spanning the current composites development lifecycle, from material design to product realisation. Our four Research Programs tackle these, and other industry challenges, currently faced in Australia,” said Dr Steve Gower, ACM CRC’s CEO.

“Through Research Program 1 – Composite Materials – we’re seeking to achieve a reduction in cost associated with composite materials, and an increase in the total market size of composites in the hydrogen, transportation and electric vehicles market. We want to deliver a reduction in inspection/testing cost and compliance cost in manufacturing and infrastructure industry relevant to composite material, as well as an increase in the composite repairs market and a reduction in maintenance and repair services required for public infrastructure, the resources sector and heavy industrial infrastructure. Through specialist application materials, we also aim to reduce downtime and its impacts on operation in the oil and gas market. And we want to see cost savings from the reduction in the glass fibre and carbon fibre waste disposed into landfills, and prevent the loss of market due to non-compliance of international standards on waste.”

Dr Gower will be attending the Composites Conference in May to explore further ideas that may support the CRC’s mission.

“Just as the CRC is doing, this leading Australian composites conference will share insights and perspectives on the composites sector across various market segments,“ said Dr Gower. “I’m excited for this opportunity to further explore the next generation of composite practitioners, applications and programs available to assist industry and research & development.”

Catch Dr Steve Gower at the 2024 Composites Conference from 1-2 May 2024, where he’d be delighted to answer any questions you may have around the CRC’s research and projected impact, and to discuss potential opportunities for collaboration.
